Quercus’ debut album features profound and touching interpretations of both traditional and non-traditional songs. They take unconventional routes to get to the heart of the music. This unique group showcases the dark voice of June Tabor, an English folk singer. It is supported and framed by the quiet adventurous arrangements and subtle improvisations made by Huw Warren and Iain Ballamy. Warren has been a collaborator with Tabor for over 25 years and has made significant contributions to Tabor’s albums. The Guardian observed that “his piano” has “taped out deeper autumnal colours in Tabor’s range.” However, their relationship in Quercus is very different. It is a very collaborative band. The emotional core of the songs is explored by singer, saxophonist, and pianist from different perspectives. The songs and their words are respected, and instrumental skills and melodic imaginations are used to illuminate them. from http://player.ecmrecords.com
