Dan Weiss

Dan Weiss started playing the drums when he was 6. At the Manhattan School of Music, he received his bachelor’s degree in jazz percussion with a minor in classical composition. He began touring the globe and recording with many musicians, including Rudresh Mahanthap, Lee Konitz and Rudresh Mahatthapa. Pandit Samir Chatterjee, Weiss’ guru on tabla, has taught him the drums for nearly 20 years. His musical style has been greatly influenced by this apprenticeship. This is evident in two of his albums, where he plays classical Indian music on the drum set. David Adler (All About Jazz) said, “Weiss has arguably been the most unique jazz drummer today, transposing ideas form his tabla study into the drum kit. This was evident in Tintal Drum Set Solo(Chhandayan, 2005) and Jhaptal Drum Set Solo (Chhandayan, 2005).” Weiss was also named ‘The Best Up and Coming Percussionist’ two years in a succession in the 60th and the 61st annual Downbeat’s Critic’s’s. The New York Times as ‘. His trio includes Jacob Sacks on the piano and Thomas Morgan, on the bass, has been leading Weiss for more than a decade. Their albums “Now Yes When” (and “Timshel”) have been highly praised for their innovative song structure and creative improvisation. The 14-piece ensemble composition by Weiss is his most ambitious. It features a rhythm section, voices, horns and percussion, as well as a harp, percussion, organ, and percussion. The much-anticipated album will be released in spring 2014. Weiss currently resides in Brooklyn, NY, where he continues to practice, teach, perform, and record. From www.danweiss.net
