Florian Weiss

Florian Weiss was born in Zurich, 1991. He began playing the trombone when he was nine years old. In 2010, he graduated from Zurich’s high school with a music major. Florian began his studies in jazz at the University of Arts Berne in 2012. He was among others who studied with Bert Joris, Bernhard Bamert and Frank Sikora. Florian applied for his Master in Jazz Performance at the Lucerne University of Arts 2015, where he continued studying with Nils Wogram and Andreas Tschopp. Participated in masterclasses with Ray Anderson and Robin Eubanks, Ilja REijngoud. Shannon Barnett, Glenn Ferris. Mark Turner, Alex Sipiagin. Florian received an honors degree in 2017 and spent three months in New York City to further his musical education thanks to a grant from the Friedl Wald Foundation. He took lessons with Elliot Mason during that time. Since 2012, Florian lives in Berne. Since 2012, Florian has lived in Berne with his quartet Woodoism. It consists of Linus Amstad (saxophone), Valentin von Fischer (double bass) and Philipp Leibundgut (drums). The band has become Florian’s most important musical expression. Woodoism’s debut album was released in 2017. Since then, the group has been touring around Europe in Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and Italy. The ZKB Jazz Prize was won by the quartet in 2018 and the Audience Prize in 2019. Neuklang Future, a German label, released their latest album in autumn 2019. Jazzthing calls it a magic brew. The release of the next album, “Alternate Reality”, is planned for 2021. Woodoism is not the only thing Florian is involved in.
