Dr. Michael White, a highly-respected jazz clarinetist from New Orleans is a tribute to the city’s dixieland heritage as well as predecessors such Sidney Bechet. White is a professor at Xavier University, where he teaches African-American Music. He also holds an endowed chair within the humanities department. White is in his 50’s. He started his musical career as a trumpet player in Doc Paulin’s Brass Band in his teens. After a few years of playing in various old-timers like banjoist Emanuel Sayles and trumpeter Kid Sheik Colar in the 70’s, White started his own band, the Original Liberty Jazz Band in 1981. White still leads that band, as well as the Liberty Brass Band or the Michael White Quartet. White is also well-known for his long association Wynton Marsalis.
