David is a versatile guitarist, who can play jazz, latin and free improvisation. He has been performing in the Bay Area area since the 1970’s. He studied jazz guitar in Portland, Oregon with Warren Black, and improvisation in Berkeley, California with pianist Art Lande. He has performed with Dave Brubeck and Lionel Hampton as well as Woody Shaw, Art Lande and Mark Isham. Luis Bonfa, a famed Brazilian guitarist, called David “a giant on the 12-string…one my favorite guitarists”. David has written over 50 jazz tunes for small ensembles. Three pieces have been written for large ensembles. “Sun Song” was first performed by the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra on January 1988. B.A.J.C.O. premiered “Echoes”. In spring 1989. The American Music Center partially funded the production of “The Jolly Blue Giant”, which premiered in July 1990. David has been to Europe many times. He was a member of the Lejimda trio at Essen, Germany’s City Festival in 1979. His 1985 tour also included a stop at Fribourg Music Festival. Beegum Records also released his 1985 debut album, “Too Many Vitamins”. The LP was a trio recording and featured David’s compositions. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Music Fellowship in 1988, which led to a quartet collaboration between Jon Jang and David. A 1991 European tour was triggered by the first record of Matt Brubeck’s duo, which was followed by a 1992 European tour featuring the Brubeck Family. from http://www.beegumrecords.com
