Patrick Zimmerli, a composer/saxophonist based in New York and Paris, creates a sophisticated and approachable mix of jazz and contemporary classical music. Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau are among his recent collaborators. Also, Brian Blade, Luciana Souza (Knights Orchestra), Brooklyn Rider String Quartet, Brian Blade and the Escher String Quartet are some of his other recent collaborators. His music has been heard at the Town Hall in New York, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Wigmore Hall, London, Wigmore Hall, Salle Pleyel, in Paris, Sala Paolo in Brazil and the Vienna Konzerthaus Großer Saal, as well as the new SF Jazz Center. Zimmerli has composed many orchestral, chamber, and choral works. These include two four-movement Piano Trios for the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, and two four movement Piano Concertos with jazz drums, which were written for the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, and the pianists Ethan Iverson, and Sonia Rubinsky. Zimmerli’s Aspects of Darkness and Light is an evening-length piece that was commissioned by the Seattle Commissioning Club. It was recorded recently by Joshua Redman and Brooklyn Rider, as well as Satoshi Takeishi, percussionist, for Nonesuch Recordings (Warner). The album is scheduled for release in 2018. In collaboration with the Paris Percussion Group, he created a site-specific piece called Waterfall/Gathering Pools. The ongoing projects include a large-scale opera for male choir, operatic singer, and jazz percussion on the work by Alan Seeger. It was first performed at the Invalides in Paris in 2017, and was reprised at Reims and the Fondation Boghossian, both in Brussels. In 2018, further performances are planned in France and the USA. Zimmerli has just been awarded the 2015 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. He also won the CLICK People’s Orchestral Commission of the Colorado Music Festival. Other commissions include the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. He was also the winner of the CLICK People’s Orchestral Commission from the Colorado Music Festival. Zimmerli was the Composer-in-Residence with the Metamorphosen chamber Orchestra from 2002 to 2005. He is also currently the curator for the INTERSECT festival at Bryant Park in Manhattan. First prize in the inaugural BMI/Thelonious monk Institute Composers’ Competition.
