Susanne Abbuehl, a Swiss/Dutch composer and singer, was born in Berne on July 30, 1970. She was attracted to music and language from an early age. At seven years old, she began studying the harpsichord. She moved to Los Angeles at the age of seventeen and began lessons in classical singing. She was part of a high school band that performed in the United States and Canada. She returned to Europe and studied classical voice and jazz at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. She graduated cum laude with a Masters Degree. Abbuehl studied North Indian vocal music with Dr. Indurama Shrivastava in Amsterdam. She later became a student at Dr. Prabha Atre, a famed master singer from Bombay to whom she frequently returns. Diderik Wagenaar, a Dutch composer, taught her composition and analysis. ECM’s recordings of “April” (2001) and “Compass”, (2006) were widely acclaimed internationally. In 2002, ‘April’ won the EDISON Music Award (Dutch Grammy). Her third ECM recording, “The Gift”, will be released in 2013. It includes compositions by Susanne abbuehl to poems by Sara Teasdale and Emily Bronte. Manfred Eicher produced the show. The line-up included Wolfert Brederode (Dutch), Matthieu Michel (Swiss flugelhornist) and Olavi Louhivuori, a Finnish drummer. Susanne Abbuehl, who has her own band, has toured extensively and been invited to perform at major festivals across Europe, North America and Asia. She recorded and performed with musicians from many musical backgrounds, including Jeanne Lee Music.
