Alejandro Neciosup Acuna, also known as Alex Acuna, is a Peruvian AfroCuban jazz drummer and composer. He was born December 12, 1944. Acuna was born in Pativilca (Peru) and played in local bands until he was ten years old. He moved to Lima when he was a teenager. He joined Perez Prado at the age of 18 and moved to Puerto Rico in 1967. Acuna was a member of the band Perez Prado in Las Vegas from 1974 to work with Diana Ross and Elvis Presley. The following year, he joined Weather Report jazz-fusion group Weather Report and appeared on the albums Black Market, Heavy Weather. Acuna quit Weather Report in 1978 and began working as a session musician in California. He recorded and played live with Chick Corea and Ella Fitzgerald. His Weather Report bandmates Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and Sam Phillips were also there. You can find him on recordings by artists as diverse as Johnny Clegg and Peter Gabriel.
