Remi Alvarez

Remi Alvarez was born in Mexico City, Mexico. From 1975 to 1979, he studied transversal flute with Ruben Islas at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica. He was a self-study saxophonist and made his professional debut with Cuarteto Mexicano de Jazz, in 1984. He later moved to New York City, where he continued his studies in composition and improvisation at The Creative Music Studio with George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, and Anthony Braxton. From 1982 to 1987, he studied jazz at the Escuela superior de Musica. He traveled to Paris in 1988 to study with Steve Lacy, composer and saxophonist. He has been a professor in jazz and saxophone at the Escuela National de Musica of the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico since 1991. He traveled to Europe in February 2004 with Georg Hoffman, a Swiss bass player, as well as Tobias Delius (a British saxophonist), and they visited several cities in Holland and Switzerland. He took an advanced improvisation course at the Vancouver Creative Music Institute in 2005 with Evan Parker and George Lewis[disambiguation required]. He was invited to perform at the Vision Festival in June 2006 by Dennis Gonzalez, a Texan trumpet player. He was the founder of Craneo de Jade and has recorded and co-produced three CDs with him. In 1997, he was invited by Dennis Gonzalez, a Texan trumpet player, to perform at the Festival Internacional de Jazz Plaza in La Habana. Craneo de Jade, who was part of the Los Diez Grandes del Jazz tribute to Mexican jazz pioneers, performed at Palacio de Bellas Artes in October 2005. Craneo de Jade was a participant in the VII Festival Internacional de San Luis Potosi in April 2007. Since 2000, he has been part of the Astillero Ensemble. He performed in France in 2001 as well as 2004. Astillero was invited to the 34th Festival Internacional Cervantino in October 2006. He has performed with Rodrigo Amado (Sabir Mateen), Dennis, Stefan, and Aaron Gonzalez, Ernest Dawkins and Vinz Vonlanthen, Michael Vatcher and Tayeb laoufi, as well as other musicians such as Tayeb, Tayeb, Tayeb, and Tayeb, the Gnawa Spirit of Morocco.
