Jonathan Barber, a New York City resident, was named the #1 Up-and Coming Drummer in Modern Drummer 2018. He is only 28 years old and has already toured the world with Buster Williams, Jeremy Pelt and Wallace Roney. Allen, Terrace Martin and Nicholas Payton are among the many artists he has recorded with, including Abraham Burton, Marcus Strickland (with Marcus Strickland), Stefon Harris, Steve Davis, Steve Davis, Steve Davis, Harold Mabern, Steve Davis and Harold Mabern. Barber has been called upon for performances such as Jimmy Greene’s Ana Grace Project, which featured an all-star band that included Greene, Kenny Barron and John Patitucci. Back-to-back sold out concerts at the BAM Opera House with Erykah Badu and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Barber is now a composer and leader of his Vision Ahead band. It features saxophonist Godwin Lou, guitarist Andrew Renfroe and bassist Matt Dwonszyk. Taber Gable is also a member. Even taking Barber’s record of recording and gigs in high-profile venues into account, DownBeat magazine deems Vision Ahead’s debut album their “greatest achievement to date.” Vision Ahead was released on Rockwood Music Hall’s biggest stage in May 2018. It is a strong declaration of intent from a band that has been making waves on today’s jazz scene ever since its debut performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Barber’s wide stylistic palette as a performer and composer is evident in the group’s mix of swinging, classic jazz and elements of soul, rock, and fusion. Vision Ahead will be performing in national venues starting in 2018 and then on to an international tour in Russia in late August. Vision Ahead was named as a finalist in the prestigious DCJazzPrix competition. Barber was born in Hartford, CT. He first fell in love with drumming when he saw his father play in the family church. Barber’s childhood in the church gave him a profound appreciation for the power, passion and full sound of gospel music. He now uses that energy to bring a wide variety of styles to his musical repertoire. Some of his early influences include Fred Hammond, Weather Report and Yellowjackets, Commissioned, as well as classic jazz giants such Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. Barber’s music is infused with soul, great groove and explosive chops. This has allowed him to combine his favourite traditions into an innovative and adaptable musical expression that appeals to all generations. Barber looks forward to recording his next album and hosting drum clinics that showcase one of his greatest talents: finding his identity in music and bringing it alive for his audience. Barber endorses Canpous Drums and Istanbul Agop Cymbals as well as Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks and Sunhouse Percussion. from http://jonathanbarbermusic.com
