Shannon Barnett

Shannon Barnett, an Australian trombonist, is currently based in Cologne. She has established herself as an influential voice in Australia’s music scene, performing with ensembles such as Vada, The Bamboos and The Vampires and as a guest with Andrea Keller Quartet on the 2004 ABC Jazz release Angels and Rascals. Barnett has performed with the Australian Art Orchestra, Barney McAll’s Mother of Dreams and Secrets feat. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Charlie Haden and from 2009-2010, she worked as a multi-instrumentalist and composer with the contemporary circus group Circus Oz. Barnett’s debut album, ‘Country’ as a leader was released on the Which Way Music label in 2010. Barnett attended Dave Douglas’ “Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music” in Banff, Canada in 2010. She was inspired to move to New York City to complete a Master of Music degree. She performed with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Pedro Giraudo and Cyrille Aimee, and was also a regular member the Birdland Big Band. She moved to Cologne in 2014 to join the WDR Big Band. This gave her the chance to perform with such guests as Vince Mendoza and Ron Carter, Joshua Redman (Josh Redman), Maria Schneider, and Paquito de Rivera. She is also very active in the local scene. Fabian Arends, Fabian Arends, David Helm, Stefan Karl Schmid and David Helm released their debut album on Double Moon/Challenge Records in 2016. The band was then nominated for semi-finalist status in the 2017 Neuer Deutschenr Jazzpreis. She presented the cross-disciplinary piece ‘Dead Weight’ to musicians and fitness studios in 2018. In early 2021, her new project ‘Wolves and Mirrors’ will release their first album. She was appointed Professor for Jazz Trombone in April 2019 at Hochschule fur Musik und Tanz, Cologne, Germany.
