Eric Binder, a drummer, composer, educator, and author who is internationally recognized, currently resides in Chicago, IL. He was born and raised in New York. Binder received his doctorate in jazz performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a graduate teaching assistant. Binder received his Master’s degree from The University of The Arts Philadelphia in Jazz Studies. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree from The College of Saint Rose, in Music Education. Associate’s degrees from SUNY Schenectady County Community College, in Classical Music Performance. Binder has performed in New York, Philadelphia, Illinois, and Florida. Binder has performed with many top artists, including Joel Frahm III, Petros Klampanis and Christos Rafalides. He also performs with his own trio and quartet. Binder spent his time as a classical percussionist before pursuing graduate studies in Jazz. He was involved in orchestral, wind ensemble, and other chamber ensembles. Binder has recorded as both a leader and as a sideman. Two of Binder’s records, including his last one, were selected as DownBeat Magazine Editors’ Picks. Binder is a composer who specializes in small-group compositions, but has also written music for voice, solo piano, big band, and other instruments. He was a finalist in the 2016 BMI Future Jazz Master’s composition competition. Hard Bop, the Eric Binder Trio album featuring Walter Smith III u0026 Petros Klampanis is due to be released July 2020. Binder is also a new author. He recently published his first two books, “An Intro to Bebop Drumming- a Concise Historical Overview, and Practical Exercises” and “10 Snare drum Etudes to Improvisation- Rudimentalsnare Drum Arrangements Featuring Jazz Vocabulary.” Other publications are in the works and will be released early 2020. His book, “10 Snare Drum Etudes for Improvisation” was voted #3 by the Modern Drummer Magazine Readers Poll. Binder is involved in the study of the history and evolution of modern drum sets, with a particular focus on the relationship between the development and music of drumming. In addition to his duties at Robert Morris Univeristy as Assistant Band Director, Binder is also a faculty member at Waubonsee community college as the Jazz Director. He also teaches private lessons at City Colleges of Chicago’s Harold Washington Campus. He records and gigs regularly across the country. He also gives master classes and clinics.
