Binker and Moses are two of the leading London-based jazz musicians who are heavily influenced by the music around them, including hip-hop, electronic, and blog culture, as well as jazz. They are connecting with a younger audience, much like their predecessors. They are trying to change the perceptions of the genre by appearing on national televised performances like the prestigious Later… With Jools Holland. However, they also perform in intimate spaces such as Dalston and Deptford’s Job Centre, as well as in cafes, bookshops, and record shops. The pair were born either side of Thames, Binker in Edmonton and Moses in Catford. They met eight years ago, and they toured extensively together as Zara McFarlane’s band. Three albums were recorded for Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. Binker and Moses developed their duo improvisations during McFarlane’s onstage sound checks. They eventually brought the idea of recording them to Gearbox Records, a vinyl-led record label that also has a mastering studio. Binker Golding, 31, has been playing the saxophone since he was 23 years old. He received his master’s degree in jazz from Middlesex University and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has had the privilege of playing with many great saxophonists, including Jason Yarde, Gilad Atzmon, Gilad Atzmon, and Steve Williamson. Binker is the TW Youth Orchestra’s Musical Director. He has also composed concert repertoire and led the Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Binker is also a member of Moses’ Exodus band and was a performer with Kano at the Mercury Prize last year. Moses Boyd, 26, started playing music when he was in his teens. Within a few years, he was performing with Denys Baptiste’s quartet in the Royal Festival Hall. Moses was named the Worshipful Company of Music’s Young Jazz Musician of Year in 2014. He also won the John Peel “Play More Jazz” Award at the 2016 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards. He has collaborated and worked with Lonnie Liston Smith (Ed Motta), Little Simz (4 Tet), Floating Points, Sampha and Gilles Peterson). His own bands, The Exodus and Solo Exodus, are his creations that blend electronica, jazz and grime. Moses also produces and records music for his Exodus Records label.
