Nat Birchall has been playing the Saxophone for more than 30 years. He has quietly been working to perfect his craft over the past 30 years, gradually but surely achieving a style that best reflects his vision of the universe. Nat was initially inspired by the great horn players of Jamaica such as Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso and Cedric Brooks. He then discovered his own voice and style on the instrument. He has been a part of many musical settings, including playing Turkish Folk/Jazz alongside Akay Temiz and forming the groundbreaking ‘Corner Crew’, which incorporated elements of Jazz and Hip Hop with the heavy Roots Reggae sound of Dubdadda. In 1999, Nat’s six-piece quintet, The Sixth Sense, released his debut CD. It was well-received and was named Jazzwise magazine’s CD of the Year. The album received a four star review. Nat’s sound has been compared favorably to Charles Lloyd, Pharoah Sands, and John Coltrane. This is a rare distinction among UK musicians. Three albums, ‘Akhenaten, ‘Guiding Spirit, and ‘Sacred Dimension’ were released by him on Gondwana. He was also a member of Matthew Halsall’s adventurous groups. He appeared on the ‘Sending My Love’, Colour Yes’, and ‘Fletcher Moss Park’ albums.
