David Budway, a versatile jazz and classical pianist, is a star at nightclubs across America. He is a jazz recording artist and also an arranger, song writer, and film composer. He has four CDs to his credit as a solo artist on the Allanna/MAXJAZZ labels. Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Turrentine were among his many recordings. He has toured in concert with Stanley Turrentine and Hubert Laws. He has performed in New York at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall, Merkin Halls, The Village Vanguards, Blue Note, Cotton Clubs, Merkin Halls, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vangard, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Village Vanguards, The Jazz Standard, Zinc Bars, and Smalls. David is a classical pianist who has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra many times. He is an exceptional improviser and classical pianist.” – Hubert Laws. “Budway, a stellar pianist and vastly underrated, was born in Pittsburgh. He began classical piano study at age five. He graduated from Taylor Alderdice High School in 1975 and earned a Masters Degree at Duquesne University, 1981 in Classical Piano. From 1983 to 1995, David was a professor of music at Duquesne University. He also taught Jazz and Classical piano. He performed solo recitals at the piano and master classes over those 15 years. He was active in jazz and performed at the Balcony Jazz Club in Pittsburgh with his sister Maureen, as well as the David Budway Trio. He performed with jazz legends Clark Terry and Jon Faddis as well as Louie Bellson and Louie Bellson. David recorded “Jazz, the Budway”, his first jazz album, in 1989 with Maureen, his sister and vocalist. He recorded in 1990 with Eric Leeds (Prince’s sax player and fellow Pittsburgher) on the Leeds Warner Brothers album “Things Left Unsaid”. David also played the featured jazz piano soloist in the 1990 independent film “Giant Steps”, starring Billy Dee Williams. David composed original music for the short film “Lift”, which features Dominic Pinon. David was a soloist in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 1992 and 1994 debuts. He performed a recital of classical music with Herbert Laws, flutist. David has since appeared on several of Mr. Laws recordings including “Storm Then the Calm” (Music Masters), “Hubert Laws Plays French Classics in Memory of Jean Pierre Rampal” (Spirit Productions/Scepterstein Records) and “Moondance” on Savoy Jazz, which features three of Budway’ original compositions. David released solo jazz piano albums “Brief Encounter of a Lifetime” (1995) and “The Music I Hear” (1996). The Shadyside jazz club, the Balcony, closed in 1980. Budway, who had been playing at the Balcony since 1980, felt that he had accomplished all that he could in Pittsburgh. He followed the lead of the Pittsburgh jazz pianists and made the move to New York City, NY in 1997. He found work with Stanley Turrentine and Branford Marsalis in New York City. He was the first to accompany Broadway diva Christiane Noll. He was the pianist for Stanely Torrentine, the Regina Carter Quintet, and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts. He is featured on the Jeff Watts “Bar Talk”, Sony CD, which includes the Budway composition “Kiss”. He was entertaining at New York’s most prestigious piano bar, “Brandy’s”, which caught Liza Minnelli’s attention. He was hired by her as her accompanist and he went on many tours across the U.S. Budway made a return visit to Pittsburgh in 1999 for a special appearance with Marvin Hamlisch and the PSO. In 2001, David was awarded two prizes in John Lennon’s Songwriting Competition. He toured with Hubert Laws on another international tour of classical music in 2010. Budway performed in concert with Liza Minelli across the country in 2011 and released “A New Kiss” via Maxjazz. “A New Kiss” features performances by Branford Marsalis and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, as well as bassist Eric Revis, guitarist Ron Affif, saxophonist Marcus Strickland and accordionist/keyboardist Joe Barbato. David Budway continues his teaching career by giving Masterclasses at William Patterson University. He also writes scholarly essays.
