Dave Burrell

Davis Burrell, born September 10, 1940, is an American jazz musician. He is most well-known for his work on the piano. His credits include work with many jazz musicians, including Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders as well as Marion Brown, David Murray, and David Murray. Howard was born in Middletown, Ohio. He discovered jazz when he met Herb Jeffries as a child. Howard studied music at the University of Hawaii from 1960 to 1960, before moving to Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts in 1961. After receiving a degree as a musician’s composer, he moved to New York City. He started the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational team with bassist Sirone, saxophonist Byard Lancashire, and drummer Bobby Kapp during his time in New York. Burrell was a co-founder of The 360 Degree Music Experience in 1968 with Grachan Moncur, drummer Beaver Harris, and bassist Sirone. In: Sanity was their first album. It was released in 1977. He also composed a jazz opera called Windward Passages together with Murray. In 1979, an album that was based on the opera’s music would be released. Burrell still tours as a soloist, as well as as the leader of a duo or African ensemble. Burrell records now for High Two Records in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. NPR, Down Beat and Village Voice praised Burrell’s 2004 album Expansion, which he recorded with drummer Andrew Cyrille and bassist William Parker. Burrell’s 2006 album Consequences (Amulet Records) was a dynamic live duo with drummer Billy Martin, Momentum and bassist Michael Formanek. It featured drummer Guillermo E.
