Ed Calle

Ed Calle, a saxophonist and composer, orchestrator and producer, scholar, teacher, leader and professor is well-known for his exceptional ability to sight-read and interpret virtually every musical style. His versatility is often praised by his colleagues and peers around the world. While he was outside the Blue Note in New York City, Michael Brecker was chatting with fans about his record-breaking performance as a saxophonist. Brecker smiled at his pupil and said, “Thanks, but Ed is probably on as many as more records.” We don’t see many credits because he records for South American artists. However, Ed is, in my opinion, the most versatile saxophonist of the planet.” Arturo Sandoval, a longtime mentor and collaborator, more clearly states, “We call Calle, the monster.” Born in Venezuela to Spanish parents, father Joaquin Calle, from Madrid, and mother Maria Begona Calle, from Barcelona, it was evident from the beginning that Ed was a talented musician. His energetic, passionate and distinctive sound caught the attention of musicians and audiences alike. Calle’s unique sound was often suggested by his teachers and classmates. Calle can now be heard on over 1,200 albums and almost 9,000 singles. He also appears on countless TV and movie soundtracks as a sideman, composer/arranger, conductor, producer, or soloist. He appears on Grammy(r)-award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Juan Luis Guerra, Arturo Sandoval, Juanes, Vicky Carr, Gloria Estefan, and Jon Secada. Calle has recorded and performed all over the world with musicians such as Phil Ramone and Carlos Santana.
