Andre Canniere, a trumpet player, composer, and educator currently resides in London. Canniere, originally from Pennsylvania (USA), spent his first five years in New York City, where he worked alongside artists like Maria Schneider, Donny McCaslin and Kate McGarry. Canniere has performed at numerous venues in the United States and Europe, including performances at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall as well as Birdland, Birdland and The Hague Jazz Festival. Canniere has steadily increased his profile since his arrival in the UK as both a solo artist or as a collaborator. Canniere’s critically acclaimed album Forward Space was released on Whirlwind Recordings (“the new label” – BBC Radio 2). Jazzwise Magazine called it “one of the most important recordings in a long while” and listed it as one of their “Best Albums 2012”. Canniere’s second Whirlwind album, Coalescence, was released the following year. It was equally well received by the press. Canniere’s third album will be released on Whirlwind in 2016. It features the “imposingly unique” (Guardian), saxophonist Tori Freestone and pianist Ivo Neame (of Phronesis fame), “virtuostic, emphatic,” (Guardian), US drummer Ted Poor (Bill Frisell Cuong Vu Ben Monder), and the “subtlety, precision” (Guardian), of guest vocalist Brigitte Bernaha. Canniere is a “imaginative newcomer” as a composer. His music “shows glimpses at an unusual fluency, freedom, and context within a dense and rhythmically complex contemporary-jazz sound.” (Guardian). Jazzwise Magazine says that Canniere’s compositions combine breezy, folky jazz elements with a dark harmonic language that is reminiscent of Radiohead and a more rock-ish, groove-based approach straight from the New York alt-jazz scene. Canniere’s music was played on many radio stations around the globe, including Radio 3 (UK), Radio 2 (Ireland), Radio 3 (UK), Radio 3 (UK), Radio Cardiff (Wales), Radio Bremen (Germany), and Radio 3 (UK). Canniere is a composer and bandleader, but he also has a career as a session musician and sideman. He is the trumpet player in many London-based bands, including Henrik Jensen’s Followed By Thirteen, Dee Byrne’s Entropi, and the Overground Collective. He has also collaborated with many of Britain’s most renowned jazz musicians, including Jasper Hoiby and Ivo Neame as well as Jim Hart, James Maddren and Alice Zawadzki. Canniere can also be found outside of the jazz scene, having performed with well-known artists such as Augustines or Stooshe. Canniere is passionate about music education. He has taught masterclasses and workshops at schools and universities across the United States as well as Europe. Andre is currently Head of Jazz at Highgate School. He also teaches jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, London. from www.andrecanniere.com
