James Carney

James Carney, pianist, keyboardist, composer, is an improviser who draws his inspiration from many sources of music. He has had the opportunity to work with many great musicians and artists over the course of his career. [Ravi Coltrane and Christian McBride as well as Darek Oleszkiewicz and Tim Berne. Nels Cline and Todd Sickafoose are just a few of the many. Carney was born in Syracuse, New York and moved to New York City in 2004 from Los Angeles. James Carney is known for his original and polystylistic approach in making music. He respects tradition while also exploring the avant-garde. As a leader, he has recorded five albums, the last two being for Songlines. In 2007, “Green-Wood”, (Songlines 1566), was released to great acclaim. “Ways” was also released in 2007.
