For PlayField project look under “PlayField” Flutist/saxophonist/trumpeter Daniel Carter isn’t as well-known as some of his contemporaries on the New York free jazz scene, which may partially be due to the fact that he refuses to name his own projects after himself. He deserves to be as famous as his peers William Parker and David S. Ware, given his long history playing in New York. Carter started playing in New York in early 1970s. He recorded sporadically during that decade with musicians such as Bob Moses and Gunter Hampel. He was known for his avant-garde music and struggled to find steady gigs. In 1978, he started performing on the streets. He joined Other Dimensions in Music in 1981. This quartet also featured Roy Campbell on trumpet and Parker on bass. Rashid Bakr played drums. The group released a self-titled album in 1989 on Silkheart. Carter was also a member of punk rock bands in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Carter’s recording career took off. While he continued playing with Other Dimensions In Music, he began recording with Test. Test, which featured multireedist Sabir Mateen and bassist Matthew Heyner as well as drummer Tom Bruno, performs regularly on subway platforms. Carter recorded with electronic musicians Spring Heel Jack, DJ Logic and avant-rock songwriter David Grubbs. Carter has been busy since 1999 with projects for the Thirsty Eye and Aum Fidelity labels.
