Deborah J. Carter

Deborah J. Carter, a vocalist, was born in the U.S.A. She grew up in Hawaii as well as Japan. She is a frequent performer at jazz festivals, jazz clubs and seminars throughout Europe and Asia. She has also taught master classes around the globe while on tour. She is a singer, composer, and arranger who brings her diverse cultural experiences to her music. She believes that we are so fortunate to be able to access other cultures and perspectives to enrich our lives. She is a dynamic singer in jazz and has been called “absolutely top-class” by Music Maker magazine. Deborah’s most recent release, “Blue Notes and Red Shoes”, was recorded by her long-standing trio with internationally acclaimed guest artists. It is an excellent example of her favorite genre,’metropolitan’ jazz. She describes it as “a type of jazz that reflects energy and spirit in any capital city in this 21st centrury,” adding that it is a form of jazz that has absorbed the influences of its inhabitants. It’s certainly Saturday night jazz! Deborah has also recorded four solo CDs. “Scuse Me …”,, her first solo CD, is a delicious combination of jazz, blues and gospel. The CD was received with rave reviews by the international press. One of its first performances was at the 1998 North Sea Jazz Festival. Later, she released a second CD that paid tribute to the moon and nocturnal life. The title song was taken from her songbook of originals. Her third CD, “Girl-Talking!” is an energetic live performance in The Hague that showcases her dynamic stage performance. The CD “Daytripper” will be released in 2016. It features eleven tracks that are jazzy versions of Beatles songs. Deborah started her career as a woodwind instrumentist in Hawaii at a young age. She then began learning music theory, arranging and composition in Japan in her teens. The prestigious Berklee College of Music continued her studies. She collaborated with Max Sunyer and Carles Benavent on CDs, singing vocals for their Mediterranean-inspired jazz. “My Spanish musical influences added the right amount passion and intensity to me art.” She worked as a theater director in Madrid before forming her own jazz quartet with which she performed at many major jazz festivals across Iberia. In addition to being a regular guest on radio and national television, she has also been a session singer for radio commercials and TV. Deborah sings with her own band, and many of her arrangements and compositions are performed with them. Deborah is also a guest artist with several established European jazz orchestras. These include the Metropole Orchestra (Frankfurt Radio), the HR (Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra), Sedavi Latin Jazz Big Band (arranger for Tito Puente), and the Berlin Jazz Orchestra.
