Matt Choboter

Multi-award-winning composer and pianist Matt Choboter was awarded the 2014 Vancouver Mayor’s Art’s Award and the 2014 Fraser Macpherson Scholar. He also became a finalist for 2015 Julian Award of Excellence to Emerging Canadian Artists. As a recipient of the Mayor’s Art’s Award to Emerging Artist Matt was named by Juno Award winner Brad Turner Vancouver’s most promising young jazz artist. He was awarded a Canada Council study grant in 2016. Matt received his Bachelor of Performance degree from Capilano University, where he studied under Ross Taggart and Kenny Wheeler. He released his first album, samskaras, the following year. He was nominated for a Julian Award for his original music. He moved to Chennai, South India in fall 2015. There he continued his musical studies in Carnatic rhythms and melodies with Karaikudi S. Subramanian, a 9th-generation veena player/vocalist. On a Canada Council Grant, Matt studied with Jean-Michel Pilc as well as Dan Weiss in 2017. Matt is an international performer and has performed with some of the most prominent jazz pianists at UNISA’s 2016 International Piano Competition. He has performed and recorded in many genres, including jazz, classical, and carnatic, along with Trichy Sankaran, Brad Turner, and many other improvisers from the Vancouver and Montreal music scene. http://mattchoboter.com
