Jackie Coon is a middle-register, cool-toned flugelhornist and vocalist. Her likable style has been a great asset to informal mainstream sessions. Coon was born in Southern California and became interested in trumpet after hearing Louis Armstrong’s song “West End Blues.” After a brief stint with Jack Teagarden’s group, some of the music broadcast on radio has been released by Arbors. He also had gigs with Charlie Barnet and Louis Prima. In 1957, he made his recording debut with Barney Bigard and played mellophone in Red Nichols greatest rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Jackie Coon stayed in California to avoid fame, but he was a regular performer at local jazz festivals and worked at Disneyland for nine years.
