Josh Deutsch, a Grammy-winning composer and trumpeter, is a unique voice in New York City’s modern music scene. He regularly performs in the United States and Europe, Canada, Asia, and Canada. Pannonia’s two albums have received acclaim from both critics and fans. Downbeat Magazine gave the album The Road to Pannonia four stars and selected Pannonia’s debut album, Another Time, Another Place, as their editor’s choice. They praised the “superb solos,” the “incredible humor” of the songs, and the “deep compositions”. Deutsch performs with Nico Soffiato, guitarist. They have toured extensively throughout North America and Italy. Guitar International described their album Time Gels (2011), as “an elegant and fresh take on the timeless (duo/duo) tradition”, and noted the duo’s ability to “perform together as a cohesive unit with an improvisational vigore and mature musicianship.” It is due for release in 2020. Deutsch has recorded with Argentinian singer/composer Sofia Rei and the Grammy-winning Mexican singer Lila Downs. He also recorded with Pedro Giraudo’s Expansions Big Band, Juancho Herrera’s guitarist/singer, Venezuelan guitarist Juancho Herrera, Hungarian musician Nikolett Pankovits, Israeli pianist Noa Fort, The Hipstones, and Colombian folklore band Grupo Rebolu. Victor Goines has directed Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and the Duke Ellington Big Band. He has performed his own projects at Dave Douglas’s Festival of New Trumpet Music, as well as at Seattle’s Earshot Jazz Festival and Albuquerque’s Outpost Summer Music Festival. He has also appeared at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Jazz Standard and Birdland, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and The Blue Note in New York City, SF Jazz in California, and The Stone in New York City. Deutsch is a composer of music in many genres. His arrangements and compositions have been performed by numerous artists including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra’s cellist Ruth Marshall, Ron Miles, Danilo Perez, the Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Ron Miles. NPR’s From The Top radio program, Music Northwest, Music Northwest, and the Head-Royce School have all given him commissions. Deutsch is a composer of hundreds of pieces for different performing ensembles. He has also written many long-form pieces, including The Ligeti Project,” a 12-movement cross-genre piece for jazz septet. It has been performed on both East and West Coasts. The work is loosely inspired by Musica Ricercata by Gyorgi Ligeti. Deutsch is an active music educator and has experience in teaching ensembles and students at all levels. He has also performed master classes and been a clinician across the country. From 2007 to 2009, Deutsch was on the Oregon Festival of American Music’s Summer Jazz Academy faculty. He also taught at the University of Oregon Summer Jazz Camp between 2007 and the present. He was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the University of Oregon in 2008 for his work with small and large jazz ensembles, and private improvisation students. He is currently the Queens College CPSM jazz department program chair. Seattle native, Deutsch began playing piano at age five and composed music at the same time. He then discovered a love for the trumpet and joined award-winning jazz bands at Garfield High School and Washington Middle School. He earned a bachelor’s in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. There he studied with Danilo Peez, Bob Brookmeyer and John McNeil as well as Allan Chase, Lee Hyla, and Allan Chase. Deutsch was a three-time participant in the Banff International Jazz Workshop. He worked closely with Kenny Werner, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell and others. He was awarded a University of Oregon Graduate Teaching Fellowship in 2006. In 2009, he earned a Masters of Music and Jazz Performance and Composition from the University of Oregon. He was awarded the Reno International Jazz Festival’s Outstanding College Trumpeter Award in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, he also received a Masters of Music in Jazz Performance and Composition from the University of Oregon.
