He is the first Danish jazz musician to achieve wide international recognition and critical acclaim since Niels-Henning Pedersen. As a 15-year-old protégé of jazz legends Thad and Ernie Wilkins, he first made his way onto the jazz scene in 1979. In 1981, he moved to the USA and quickly rose to fame playing and recording with jazz legends Joe Henderson, Clark Terry and Charlie Haden. His long record career includes 33 albums as a leader, as well as many albums as a producer and sideman for other artists. His recordings are represented on such prestigious jazz labels like Blue Note, Columbia and Verve. He is a jazz pianist who is highly respected in Denmark. His albums have won multiple awards and reached the top of the Japanese bestseller charts. He has performed for numerous prominent figures around the world, including Pope Jean-Paul I and Queen Margrethe II. Doky was appointed Doky member of the Music Committee by the Danish Arts Council in June 2003 by Brian Mikkelsen, Denmark’s minister for culture. Niels moved to Paris in 1989. He made his debut as a director of film in 2005 with the acclaimed documentary music film “Between a Smile and a Tear”. It starred Toots Thielemans and Lisa Nilsson. His third film is a music movie that blends documentary and fiction. The American Recording Academy, i.e. the US Grammy Awards, asked Niels to join their jazz committee in October 2008.
