Jon Eardley (1928-1991), a trumpeter, made his recording debut with Phil Woods. He also replaced Chet Baker in Gerry Mulligan’s famous quartet. He recorded and played with Mulligan for the next few years, including Mulligan’s stellar sextet. He also managed three great record dates for Prestige. His debut quartet album J.E. His debut album J.E. was his quartet album. Hey There Jon Eardley! was the second album. It featured J.R. Monteroseone, one of the most heartening tenors his generation, and another rhythm section in which George Syran is a significant asset. Eardley’s work is extraordinary. The J.E. LP was the third. The J.E. Seven was the third LP. It featured the same rhythm section and four horns. This made it a memorable blowing date. Eardley, who emigrated to Europe in 1969 was a man that deserves to be more well-known in his home country. His tone was strong and vibrant, his conception was always personal and within his limits.
