Eight musicians met in January 1985 to premiere new music at Chicago Filmmakers’ Thursday night concerts. Two woodwinds, trumpet and trombone were used to create the unique instrumentation. The concert, called “New Music for 8 Bold Souls”, was a hit with musicians and critics alike. The group 8 Bold Souls was formed by Edward Wilkerson, Composer and Reedist. It is essential to learn more about Edward Wilkerson, the leader of 8 Bold Souls. Musically, Wilkerson draws inspiration from the people he’s studied with or worked alongside, such as Henry Threadgill and Henry Threadgill, Lester Bowie and Fred Anderson, Von Freeman, Johnny Britt and many other members of the AACM. Wilkerson also cites other non-musical inspirations such as family, education, and readings. Wilkerson was nurtured by the AACM and taught to think about music in a supportive environment that encouraged experimentation and musical education. 8 Bold Souls’ music has a melodic quality that is reminiscent of small groups like Jimmy Lunceford and Duke Ellington.
