Mark Kavuma, a young trumpet player in the British jazz scene, was born and raised in Uganda. He is the leader of his own band and also plays with Jean Toussaint’s Young Lions, Jazz Jamaica, and Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Mark is an integral part of the vibrant, young London jazz scene. His debut album, “Kavuma” (Ubuntu music), features a London-New York group of outstanding artists who provide soulful jazz. Their goal is to inspire people to move by allowing them to feel the music’s soul and heart. PizzaExpress’s ‘Kavuma’ is all about having fun and making people laugh. His own quartet, the “Floor Rippers”, is his house band. He also leads his main ensemble, “The Banger Factory”. Mark was a guest soloist in 2012 with Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra and was voted the best soloist at the first ‘Essentially Ellington’ competition in the UK. Mark was a part of the National Theatre’s 2013 production of “The Amen Corner”. He was also able to perform with Mulatu Astatke at the Barbican and play a supporting role for Wayne Shorter. Mark also played trumpet in the ‘El Train’ at Hoxton Hall, directed by Sam Yates, and Ruth Wilson. Mark was a featured performer in Peter Brooke’s production of ‘The Suit’ in 2014 and toured the globe in 2015. In 2015, he travelled with Les Ambassaduers and Salif Keita. After performing as a guest soloist with Wynton Marsilis and the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, Mark returned to Trinity College of music to continue his studies. After appearing in Hoagy B Carmichael’s production of “This Joint Is Jumpin” at the Other Palace Theatre in 2017, he began work on his debut album, Ubuntu Records.
