Tuur was born in Belgium in 1985. Music has always been a constant presence in his life. His father was a passionate blues player and his mother was a lover of world music. As a child, she would take Tuur to Sfinks, an annual festival of world music, where he could see big names such as Ali Farka Toure and Salif Keita.
Tuur recalls how he used to lay on his couch listening to Miles Davis and Salif Keita as a child. Tuur began his musical journey at age 8 when he was subscribed by his parents to classical percussion classes at Mechelen’s music academy (BE).
After completing his studies at De Kunsthumaniora Antwerp (BE), and then the Lemmens Institute (BE), Tuur made the decision to move to The Netherlands in order to explore jazz and other world music.
Tuur attended masterclasses and workshops with many of the best musicians in the world during his Rotterdam Conservatory Codarts studies starting in 2005.
Tuur was awarded the Erasmus Jazz Price on March 22nd 2009.
As a young musician, Tuur had enjoyed rapid success and was already playing in concerts abroad at the age of 15. He had even started performing with his percussion duo in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.
While completing his Codarts studies, Tuur began to feel at home in the international music scene. He was invited by Ben van den Dungen, a Dutch jazz saxophonist, to tour with a variety of bands including State of Monc and Ntjam Rosie, a Cameroonian singer, and Neco Novellas, a Mozambican singer. He was a part of major music festivals such as Java Jazz Festival, Jakarta, Indonesia, Ollinkan Festival in Mexico City and Bangkok Jazz Festival, Shanghai, China.
Tuur was active in the music scene for many years with artists such as State of Monc and Rogier Teldeman Trio. But it was 2012 that he started his own band, Tuur Moens, a fur band of 11 international musicians. He produced, recorded and released the EP album “Clockwise” with this project. Tuur also performed at the Delft Jazz Festival, Breda Jazz Festival, and North Sea Jazz Festival 2012 with his syndicate. It became difficult to develop this band due to the busy schedules of band members and the fact that they no longer reside in The Netherlands. Tuur ended the project in 2013.
Tuur’s composition style has changed significantly over the years. Tuur met a musician in 2012 who would help him take his music to the next level. Via YouTube he connected with Munir Hossn, a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer known from his work with Mayra Andrade, Daniela Mercury, Alfredo Rodriquez, Roberto Mendes and his own project ‘Made in Nordeste’.
After Tuur had added drums and percussion in a song titled ‘Tudo bala,’ which originally contained only vocals and guitar, the rendezvous took places. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9QSHtVi7ew. Tuur and Munir have been good friends ever since and often share the stage. This encounter led to Tuur meeting many influential musicians from the French and Brazilian music scenes, as well as Spanish, Cuban, Cuban, Brazilian, and French.
Tuur has been focusing his efforts on composition since 2014 while still being active as a sideman with several bands, such as Rogier Telderman trio, trumpet player Teus Nobel and Mn’ Jam Experiment. He also plays in Ntjam Rosie’s band, Dina Medina. Tuur takes the drum parts as well as some arranging roles in various albums like ‘Elle’, The One’, The One’, & ‘The One’.
In 2016, Tuur was asked to play the regular drums with Lura, the Cape Verdian singer. This was a new challenge which opened up new international avenues.
