A descendant of avant-garde musicians, who has produced, performed and released a large volume of progressive R&B/hip-hop.
The music of Georgia Anne Muldrow is powerful and confident enough to support political protests but also has enough energy to play at double dutch competitions. Muldrow is part of a musical family. She made her recording debut in 2004. Within two years, she was the first woman to be signed to Stones Throw’s prestigious label. In 2006, Muldrow released her first album, Olesi : Fragments Of An Earth. Muldrow was a key player in Los Angeles’ vibrant underground music scene, which included beatmakers, musicians, singers and songwriters. With varied solo albums like Umsindo in 2009, Seeds in 2012, and Overload in 2018, she has successfully filled each of these roles. She also collaborated with Robert Glasper and Blood Orange, as well as releases on SomeOthaShip.

Georgia Anne Muldrow was born in Los Angeles, California and raised there. She grew up listening to avant-garde jazz. Rickie Byars Beckwith, her mother and vocalist, is a spiritual teacher and spiritual singer. She also co-founded the long-running Sound of Agape. Father Ronald Muldrow, a guitarist and composer, worked closely with Eddie Harris. He also released several of his own albums for Enja. Georgia attended The New School in New York after high school. Muldrow was filling all of these roles within a matter of years. Muldrow became well-known in 2004, when she self-produced and self released her debut, Worthnothings EP. She also co-wrote and performed the lead vocals on Platinum Pied Pipers “Your Day Is Done”. Muldrow’s first production for other artists was Dwight Trible and the Life Force Trio’s “Rise,” which she also wrote in 2005. She was soon signed to Peanut Butter Wolf’s Stones Throw label as the first woman. The label reissued Worthnothings in April 2006. Muldrow was featured on Expressions (2012 A.U.). Dudley Perkins was their new signee, and they formed an artistic and personal bond. Muldrow also appeared on Radiohead’s “In Limbo” version with Sa-Ra that month. Muldrow’s first Stones Throw album, Olesi Fragments Of An Earth, was released four months later. It is a fusion of hip hop, soul, jazz and jazz that features very few traditional tracks. Eric Lau’s EP was another Muldrow-Perkins recording that year. Muldrow’s output has been prolific and there are many outlets that make it difficult to track his movements. Muldrow was the behind Muldrow’s 2007 album Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5, which featured Perkins, Eagle Nebula, and other close associates. She was billed as Dudley & Georgia and Perkins shared duties on the mixtape Beautiful Mindz, which was released by Eclectic Breaks. G&D also released The Message Uni Versa (Look Records). Her mother’s Supreme Inspiration, Erykah Badu and her landmark New Amerykah (Pt. 1: Fourth World War. Muldrow and Sa-Ra’s Shafiq Usayn co-wrote and produced “Master Teacher”, with both featuring as vocalists. This song helped to popularize the African-American Vernacular English phrase, “Stay awake.” Muldrow and Perkins finished the decade with Eagle Nebula’s Cosmic Headphones being released and the establishment of SomeOthaShip. This label was launched with the Connect Game compilation EP, which was made possible by Mello Music Group and Flying Lotus. Muldrow was responsible for all three albums of SomeOthaShip, all of which were released in 2009. These included the compilation Ms. One, Perkins’ Holy Smokes, the solo album Umsindo and the second solo album. Umsindo featured a solo rendition of “Roses”, which was first heard on Mos Def’s The Ecstatic. It presented an indivisible mixture of progressive soul, experimental Jazz, and organic Hip-Hop. Animated Cartunes released previously unreleased Muldrow material to Early at the end of the year. Muldrow began 2010 with Ubiquity’s Kings Ballad album. This was a fairly straightforward set, with the title track being a tribute to Michael Jackson. Mello Music Group released an album-length version the SomeOthaShip compilation within weeks. Muldrow, alias Jyoti, a member of the electronic avant-jazz group, released her debut album a few months later with Ocotea via SomeOthaShip. She released Vweto on Mello in 2011 and the Bilal-enhanced Owed Mama Rickie (Animated Cartunes) in 2012. Perkins also worked on Suzi Analogue’s “The Program” in 2011. Muldrow’s 2012 album Seeds saw the turn of events. It featured high-viscosity beats by Madlib, a former Stones Throw labelmate. Muldrow also met in 2012 with DJ Romes from the Lootpack for an old-school/electro session as the Blackhouse. He remixed Robert Glasper’s “The Consequences Of Jealousy” for the Black Radio Recovered EP. Denderah, a second Jyoti album and Lighthouse, another Muldrow/Perkins joint venture, were released in 2013. Muldrow was back at Mello Music Group in 2015 with A Thoughtiverse Unmarred. Muldrow described it as her first rap album, and was produced by Chris Keys. Muldrow also recorded full-lengths with Nosizwe, Blood Orange, and Glasper. She continued to co-pilot SomeOthaShip. Overload was recorded by Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label in 2018. It features a diverse and generous collection of R&B that promotes gratitude, divine love and self-defense.
