Yulia Musayelyan was a Russian citizen. At the age of 4, she began music lessons with Valeri Brainin. She then continued her studies at the prestigious Gnessin School of Music. She was a National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts Award recipient in 2001. Yulia is a versatile flutist who can play both jazz and classical idioms. She has experience with Brazilian music and Argentinean folklore. Yulia is a jazz flutist, improviser and has performed at Montreux Jazz off-Festival, Switzerland 2001, as well as IAJE conventions New York and New Orleans. She has recorded and performed with artists from many genres, including Marta Gomez and Marta Topferova. With various musical projects, she has toured the US and Europe, as well as Central and South America. Yulia is well-versed in the importance of composer-performer interaction and has performed with many emerging composers as well as established musicians like Michael Gordon. She was the soloist in 2005 with TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble, with Pierre Boulez as guest conductor. This performance included “L’explosante fixe” for 3 flutes and electronic ensemble. Natalie Bonn (2006) features her original compositions. Her chamber pieces have been performed at Symphony Space, New York City’s Nemoy Thalia Theater. Yulia has recorded more than 25 albums as a sideman and her quartet’s debut album, “Caminos”, was released in 2009. Her quartet, “Tango meets Jazz”, MaCaYu Trio and Fernando Huergo Quintet perform regularly. She also plays with the Brooklyn Orchestra, Gaia Wilmer Octet and MOZIK. Yulia has a BM degree in flute performance from Manhattan School of Music, where she was a student of Marya Mart, and an MA in Performance u0026 Composition from New York University. She studied composition with Ira Newborn and flute with Robert Dick. She joined the Berklee College of Music faculty in 2017. from www.outsideinmusic.com
