Christian Muthspiel, trombonist, composer, conductor and pianist, is an international musician in jazz/improvised and new classical music. His innovative cross-over work is evident in his numerous invitations to perform, create, and lead in important musical centers around the globe. Christian Muthspiel is most concerned with the mix of composed and improvised music. The fusion of the energy of single moments and the formal possibilities of predetermined music. The range of Muthspiel’s activities and potential cooperations with musicians of his musical inventions extends from small jazzbands to large symphony orchestras, and even electronic multi-media operas. Christian Muthspiel has been a composer and conductor of his own special concert cycles, such as the “Camerata Salzburg”, and “Munchener Kammerorchester” in recent years. These include the four Mozart Loops for orchestra at the Philharmonie Essen, and in Salzburg 2006/07. This is a combination of classical orchestral work and different styles of jazz or pop (performed with Wolfgang Muthspiel). The premiere of the Wiener Musikverein’s commissioned piece (a work for large chorus to commemorate the 150th anniversary) took place in 2008. This was followed by the Weimar premiere of Angelika Kirchschlager’s song cycle, which was commissioned by Siemens Arts Program. In 2009, a double concert will be performed for violin, drums, large orchestra and a new ensemble piece. ENNAHH… (for Albert Mangelsdorff), a concert for trombones and large orchestra, was commissioned by the ORF and the Philharmony Essen. It was originally performed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2006, with Christian Muthspiel performing as the soloist at both the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Brucknerhaus Linz. It will be performed in Essen and Kaiserslautern in 2008 with the German Radio Philharmony. Christian Muthspiel won the Hans Koller Preis in 2007 as “Musician-of-the Year”. In 2006, the Austrian Award for Outstanding Achievements in Musik and the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Lower Austria were presented to him. Together with Wolfgang Muthspiel, the Jazzpott 2006 was established. A series of exhibitions that present Muthspiel’s paintings, which he had kept secret for many years, began in 2006.
