Marty Napoleon

Marty Napoleon was the nephew of Phil Napoleon, a trumpeter, and the younger brother to Teddy Napoleon, a pianist. His greatest fame came from playing with Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars in two stints. Napoleon was a versatile player who could play both swing and bop. He was originally a trumpeter but heart problems forced him to change to piano. Napoleon gained early experience with big bands such as Chico Marx and Joe Venuti, Lee Castle and Charlie Barnet (1945). Napoleon was a member of Charlie Ventura’s Big Four in the early 1950s. He also worked with the Memphis Five, his uncle, and was with Louis Armstrong between 1952-1953. Napoleon led many of his own trios and had a two-piano quartet in 1955 with his brother Teddy. He also worked with Red Allen, Charlie Shavers, Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Shavers. He reunited Louis Armstrong in his final years (1966-1968, 1968-1971 and then again in 1968-1971), and he was semi-retired in 1980s. Marty Napoleon did not record a session, despite his talent.
