Ted Nash (uncle)

Ted Nash was born Oct. 31, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts. His brother Dick Nash was a well-known trombonist. Club 15 was his first venue. He was drafted at 4F due to his back. Ted joined Les Brown’s Band of Renown in 1944. Butch Stone, the band’s baritone saxophonist, met Ted at Union Station. Ted was only to replace John Hays (a good friend of Ted) for two weeks. John was to play for Hal McIntyre. Les liked Ted so much, he kept Ted going and let John go due to John’s drinking. John never spoke again to Ted. Ted was a member of the Band of Renown for 2.5 year. Ted was known for being adventurous. One of their tours took them by train to Heshey, PA. Ted, an avid train fan, decided to climb on top of the moving train. The train officials discovered that Ted had done it and went to look for him. Don Kramer, the manager of the band, kept Ted in the men’s room. Don Kramer, the manager of the band, confessed to the officials that the offender was one of his members. According to the train police, they should have suspected it was a musician. Ted was taken into Don’s custody throughout the journey. Each man was given a parachute when he traveled by military transport (plane). Ted could jump from the plane if he was equipped with a parachute. He left the band in 1947 when Doris Day moved to Hollywood. He began a career playing on TV and film. Ted should not be confused with Ted Nash, his nephew and jazz saxophonist Ted Nash. from http://en.wikipedia.org
