Me’shell Ndegéocello

Meshell Ndegeocello, following the critically acclaimed Weather (2011), announces the release her 10th studio album Pour une ame souveraine (“For an sovereign soul”) as a tribute to Nina Simone. The singer-songwriter, rapper and bassist joined by Jebin Bruni (keys), Deantoni Parkers (drums), and reworked some tracks that were made famous by the legendary musician. The album features Sinead O’Connor and Lizz Wright as well as Tracy Wannomae (keys), Toshi Reagon, Cody ChesnuTT, and Valerie June. Meshell will be sharing “Be My Husband”, the classic track from the album, to celebrate its release. This song was just broadcast on NPR. Meshell is joined by Valerie June, a New York singer-songwriter, on vocals. This album was created in ten days by Pete Min’s guitarist. It reflects Meshell’s admiration for the pioneering work that refused to be confined by industry, genre or expectation. Meshell says that this album is a tribute to Nina Simone’s incredible influence, but also to the one, inner life we all share. Meshell adores Nina Simone as a strong influence, both politically and musically. Her music played a major role in the fight for equal rights across the United States. Meshell explains that although she wanted to be successful, she was forced to have hits but her own music was unstoppable. She had many things to say and protested. “She had things to say, she protested. Meshell Ndegeocello adds a subtle twist to tracks from the Pour une ame souveraine, starting with the pulsing ballad “House Of The Rising Sun” and ending with the soulful vocals of “Feeling Good”. We wanted to do something that Nina Simone would be proud of. Chris Bruce, Meshell’s co-producer and arranger, says that we realized it meant we had the responsibility to do what feels right to us. “We didn’t want to recreate the old versions. We felt that Nina was the only one who could be honored if Meshell found her voice in the material. Nina was always exploring, experimenting and very cathartic. You will often find multiple versions of the same song if you look at her work. We wanted to tap into the same creative spirit as her and make these songs ours. We hope she will appreciate the final product and feel proud.” From meshell.com
