Near East Quartet blends the sounds of traditional Korean music, gugak and modern Jazz through improvisation, storytelling and storytelling to create an intriguing mix of rhythms and forms. The group was formed in 2010 by Son Sungjae (saxophonist, composer), Chung Suwuk (guitarist), and Lee Soonyong (percussionist). They performed regularly at local clubs and concerts in South Korea. This group developed a distinctive sound and broke down the barriers between traditional Korean music and jazz. In the same year, they also recorded their debut album Chaosmos. They were invited to perform their music at the 7th Annual Performing Arts Market in Seoul in 2011. This opportunity was well received by both Europe and the United States. The quartet welcomes Junyoung Song, a jazz drummer, and Yulhee Kim as vocalists. They continue to explore the two musical worlds that transit between Eastern and Western territories.
