The New Orleans Owls, active 1922-29, were an early New Orleans jazz band that was descended from The Invincibles string band. They recorded 18 sides for Gennett from 1925 to 1927 and 23 sides for Columbia between 1925 and 1927 on 78 Gramophone records. They were the first to record using an electric system that operates from a mobile recording van. They were primarily a part of the Roosevelt Hotel’s dancers. In the 1920s, the Halfway House Orchestra was replaced by Abbie Brunies. Benjie White (cl), as, leader), Bill Padron (very much involved in the Paul Mares School) (ct), Lester Smith(ts), Mose Ferar (p), Rene Gelpi [bjo, g], Dan LeBlanc (“d”), Frank Netto (“tb”), Pinky Vidacovitch („cl, as”) and Sigfre Christensen (“p”) were among their members. Although their records aren’t as collectible than those of New Orleans Rhythm Kings and the Friars Society Orchestra, they will still be worth a lot at auction if they’re in great condition.
