Painkiller, also known as Pain Killer, is an original 1991 band. Their music is a mixture of avant-garde and grindcore. Later albums included elements of ambient and dub. John Zorn plays saxophone and Bill Laswell plays electric bass. Mick Harris, formerly of Napalm Death, is the drummer. The band has had many musicians guest appear live or in the studio including Mike Patton and Yamatsuka Eye as well as Makigami Kichi, Justin Broadrick, G. C. Green of Godflesh and Keiji Haino from Fushitsusha. In 1995 Harris left the band to focus solely on computer music. Many assumed that Painkiller had been defunct after his departure. Zorn and Laswell recently revived the band’s name and played a few dates with either Hamid Draper or Yoshida Takuya on drums.
