Park St Trio

Jason Countryman and Steve Slater were good friends who met for coffee a few years back. The conversation turned to music as it did for professional musicians. But this conversation was very different. Steve and Jason were inspired by jazz music and began to find a purpose for their conversation. This conversation was bound to lead to something. They had never done this before. After the coffee had ended and words exchanged, they came up with a band name: Park St. Trio. Their plan was to write original jazz music that people like. Make an album. Goodnight, Daylight, Park St. Trio quickly assembled the songs for their first album. Jason almost matched the number of songs Steve had written. “Goodnight, Daylight,” the album’s title track, is a lullaby that Steve wrote for his son. It seemed appropriate to everyone that it would be the album title. Steve also chose the cover art, which features a 1910 photo of Park St. in Alameda. This is the exact spot where the idea for this band was born. The music had an old-time, classic feel and the historic black and white photo of Park St. was perfect. The album was recorded in Fremont, CA at Little Red Wagon Studios. They used a traditional approach to recording the album. While most albums are now digitally recorded, Park St. Trio recorded the album to a 1-inch tape. This meant that there were no over-dubs or “fixing” notes and no redo’s. It was just jazz music. Headless Buddha Studios, Oakland, CA was responsible for mastering. Park St. Trio’s second album 3 Plus Five was also recorded in this same way. Steve and Jason created new songs quickly, but this time it was more modern and included a wider range of sounds. To add depth, excitement and unpredictableness to their music, they invited five guest musicians to record with them. The result is a catchy and high quality album that has Park St. Trio firmly established on the Bay Area jazz scene. Park St. Trio’s music is available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Bandcamp.com, which is the band’s favourite site. Park St. Trio performs all across the Bay Area and California.
