Robert Randolph speaks about Lickety Split and a few words spring to mind: “joy,” freedom, and “energy.” These are the same emotions that quickly flood a listener’s minds when the twelve tracks of the pedal steel guitarist and long-time accompanists, The Family Band, blast out the speakers. Randolph says that his music is “upbeat, uptempo and with great guitar chords.” Don Was, president of Blue Note Records, says Randolph. He has mastery over the undoubtedly most complicated instrument in the world, and developed a unique voice that’s equal parts street-corner and Bonnaroo. “This album captures the excitement and energy of his legendary live performances.” Randolph’s journey to Lickety Split, which was his first studio recording in three year, wasn’t easy. His unique mix of rock, rhythm, and funk is still evident.
