Elis Regina Carvalho, born March 17, 1945, and died January 19, 1982. She was born in Porto Alegre Brazil. At age 11, she started her singing career on Radio Farroupilha, a children’s radio station. In 1965, she won her first festival song contest singing “Arrastao” (The Trawling net)-by Vinicius De Moraes and Edu Lobo. Gilberto Gil was among the musicians she recorded. She recorded songs by Milton Nascimento and Joao Bosco. She was a dynamic singer with a great intonation and excelled in up-tempo numbers. Her nickname was “furacao”, which means “the hurricane” and “pimentinha”, which means “little pepper”. Elis Regina, 36, died from a cocaine overdose at her home in 1982.
