Dave Rivello is the director of the Eastman School of Music’s award-winning New Jazz Ensemble. In addition to this, Dave is also a freelance composer/arranger/music copyist. He has served as composer-in-residence at a number of schools, writing for their ensembles and giving clinics and private lessons. The New York Council of the Arts, Harvard Project Zero, Meet The Composer and Harvard Project Zero sponsored his residencies. The Dave Rivello Ensemble is his own 12-member group that plays his original compositions. Dave has been commissioned to write for The Smithsonian Institute and The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. He also wrote for The Penfield Music Commission Project and The Youngstown State University Jazz Ensemble. His music has been performed extensively in the United States and Germany. Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in music from Youngstown State University’s Dana School Of Music. He also completed a double major in trumpet performance (jazz emphasis), and music education. Dave also took private lessons with Sam D’Angelo, focusing on music theory, composition, arranging, as well as music theory, while at YSU. In 1987, he moved to Rochester, New York to complete his Masters in Jazz and Contemporary Writing at the Eastman School of Music. He was awarded the Down Beat magazine award “Best Original Extended Composition” and the International Association of Jazz Educators award “Best Original Large Ensemble composition”. Dave worked as a music copyist for Bob Brookmeyer and Joseph Schwantner, Kenny Werners, Donald Hunsbergers, Rayburn Wrights, Manny Albams, Bill Dobbins, and Kenny Werners.
