Roots (south Africa)

Roots was a band that consisted of Barney Rachabane, Dennis Mpale, Duke Makasi and Sipho Gumede. They also had Peter Morake (drums), Jabu Nkosi(organ). Add Basil Coetzee to the sax, and Jabu Nkosi is replaced with Abdullah Ibrahim. This group recorded the iconic African Herbs LP. Roots is often cited as an important strand in developing an indigenous afro-jazz sound that connects the Drive, the Pelican Clubhouse band under Dick Khoza and Spirits Rejoice, and later Sakhile. In “In Township Tonight”, David Coplan noted in the liner notes that there were public performance difficulties at the time. In the late seventies, there was no place left to perform such music. from http://electricjive.blogspot.com
