Andy Schumm

Andy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began piano lessons at the age of six. Andy started playing the trumpet in elementary school and high school, but he discovered his true passion for jazz when he studied with Mike Plog (a well-known modern jazz trumpeter). Andy began to arrange under Chip McNeill, the University of Illinois’ program director. He studied trumpet and cornet with Tito Carrillo at the University of Illinois. After hearing Bix Beiderbecke’s sublime recording of “At the Jazz Band Ball”, Andy was set as a 20s musician. Andy began playing in Dixieland bands, and he discovered that he was able to get more work as an ’20s musician than as a modern player. Andy is heavily influenced primarily by Bix but draws inspiration from many musicians, including Red Nichols and Jelly Roll Morton as well as King Oliver, JabboSmith, Jabbo Smith, Tommy Dorsey, Jabbo Jones, King Oliver, King Oliver, JabboSmith, JabboSmith, and Jabbo Smith (especially when he does covert recordings of himself playing trumpet!). He enjoys listening Johnny Dodds, Herb Morand and other music. Andy is a full-time musician currently touring the globe with different groups. The Archipelago Project is one such non-profit outreach group. It promotes musical arts for young students, their teachers and through consultation, residency, and performance. He is not content with playing one instrument. He has also taken on many other jobs, including the piano, trombone and clarinet, as well as the banjo, clarinet, baritone, drums, and bass sax. A fractured frumpet and a melodica are also his talents. Andy spends his free time arranging charts and collecting junk including old instruments and 78 RPM. records. He also enjoys kayaking and camping in Db, when he is not working. He also enjoys the humor of the Marx Brothers. from http://andyschumm.com
