Ingebrigt and Raoul Bjorkenheim met at the Jyvaskyla Jazz Festival to create the original Scorch Trio. Flaten travelled to Finland with Elements’ drummer Paal Nulssen-Love in 2000 for several concerts and a recording of the Finnish national radio YLE. This led to more gigs in Scandinavia and the trio eventually recorded three albums for Rune Grammofon: Scorch Trio (2002, Luggumt (2004), and Brolt (2006). The trio performed at many European festivals and also played club dates in Japan, Canada, and the USA. Their music was often compared to Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies or Blood Ulmer, and they gained a reputation for their improvised power-jazz. Flaten’s member Frank Rosaly joined the band to record their new album at Bill Laswell’s Orange Sound Studio in 2009. It was released as Melaza on October 25, 2010, a new chapter for the Scorch Trio. Mars Williams, a Chicago-based saxophonist, joined the trio in May 2011. Williams is an accomplished musician, arranger, and orchestrator who has been instrumental in energizing many groups and projects through his fiery tenor playing.
