Trygve Seim

Norwegian jazz composer and saxophonist Trygve Seim is Trygve. Seim was born in Oslo, Norway. He began playing the saxophone after hearing Jan Garbarek’s CD eventyr. From 1987 to 1990, he studied music at Foss Videregaende Skole and jazz music from the Trondheim Conservatory for Music between 1990 and 1992. Seim’s debut CD release as a leader, Different Rivers, released on the german record label ECM in 2001, received good reviews all over the world, winning the German Record Critics Prize, “Jahrespreis – Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”. He has since released many records with ECM. Seim and Christian Wallumrod, pianist and singer, founded the group Airamero in 1991 with Johannes Eick on bass, and Per Oddvar Johansen drums. Airamero was released in 1994 by the group. It has also been on several concert tours throughout Scandinavia and Germany. In 1992, Trygve joined Jon Balke’s Oslo 13 group and in 1994, he took over joint leadership with Morten Halle (Torbjorn Sunde) of the group. Now, the group is called 1300 Oslo. Seim is also part of the jazz quartet The Source, which includes Oyvind Braekke and Mats Eilertsen. They have released five albums and performed numerous concert tours in Europe and Russia. Seim has also performed with Kenny Wheeler and Edward Vesala. Seim has composed music for classical musicians in recent years, including Anne-Lise Berntsen (Norwegian mezzo soprano), Tora Augestad (soprano), Atle Sponberg (violinist), and his new piece Between Voice and Presence, which he wrote for the Trio Mediaeval.
