Tevet Sela, a Montreal-based composer and saxophonist, is also a composer. Tevet Sela has led his own quartet over the past years. It exclusively plays his music. Tevet’s repertoire combines jazz with elements from Klezmer, African, and Middle Eastern music. Tevet began playing the classical piano when he was 7. At the age of 12, Tevet began to play the piano and then he became interested in Jazz. He began to compose his own music at the age of 16. This was when he began his professional musical career. Tevet quickly became a sought-after session player. He played at the top Israeli TV shows’ house bands and contributed solos to soundtracks and artist releases. Tevet also played on the multi-platinum ‘Idan Raichel’ album. Tevet is also a graduate from Thelma Yelin school of arts and has toured the Netherlands and France as its big band featured soloist. Tevet also holds a Diploma of Music Education and has won numerous scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Fund over the years. Tevet was endorsed by the Israeli Foreign Ministry on many projects, including representing Israel at an UNICEF benefit concert. The concert, which was broadcast from the Netherlands to 35 other countries, featured international artists like Des’ree and Youssou Na’doure. Tevet started his own band in 2000 and began recording and performing his original compositions. Tevet released his debut album, ‘Tevet Sela’ in spring 2003. He was followed by a tour of international jazz venues and festivals in Israel and overseas. Live concerts by Tevet are a hit with both Israeli and European audiences. His music is regularly played on radio stations all over the globe, including the BBC Radio and the top Jazz stations in America. The JPF Music Awards 2006 nominated the debut album for both the ‘jazz album’ and ‘jazz composition’ awards. Tevet’s second CD, ‘Coming True’ was released in 2007. Tevet recorded the album in a quartet setting. It continues the adventurous spirit of his debut album, but has a jazz-funk feel. It showcases Tevet’s growing writing, arrangement and producing skills. This album was well-received and Tevet’s band toured and performed to support it. Tevet released his third album, Jazz flute, in January 2010. The album quickly became one of iTunes’ top-selling albums in its category.
