Audrey Shakir

Audrey Shakir was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, into a musical family. Her mother was an organist, pianist and vocal coach. Her father, Billy Eckstine’s idol, loved to sing. Her professional career began as a pianist with a group that performed the songs of Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kan and other artists. Audrey began to gravitate towards Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, while also singing, thanks to the vocal influences of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. She was first introduced to Barry Harris after moving to New York. This led to many gigs with him. She was a regular performer at The Village Gate, and also had dates at Tavern on the Green, the Apollo Theater, and Town Hall. Audrey moved to Atlanta in late 1980’s where she became the most well-known jazz singer in the city. She’s sold out at all the jazz clubs in Atlanta, including at many Atlanta Jazz Festivals. She is highly sought after to perform throughout Atlanta and has been featured in numerous articles about Atlanta’s arts scene. She is often referred to as the best scat singer since Ella Fitzgerald. Audrey has been a part of many notable musical performances over the years. Hot Shoe Records’ CD “If You Could see Me Now” allowed Audrey to add her unique voice to a variety of jazz standards and classics. She is currently working on a new album that combines her jazz influences with contemporary tunes. Audrey Shakir is a true world-class performer.
