Avery Sharpe

Avery Sharpe, born August 23, 1954, is an American jazz double bassist. Sharpe started playing piano when he was eight years old and also learned accordion as a child. As a teenager, Sharpe learned electric and acoustic basses. He then studied with Reggie Workman from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Before joining McCoy Tyner’s sextet, he was a member of Wynton Marsalis’ and Pat Metheny’s bands. He also played with Tyner’s trio from 1984 to 2002. He has played sideman with Yusef Lateef and Ricky Ford as well as Joe Ford and Archie Shepp. He has released several albums on Sunnyside Records and his own label JKNM as a leader. He is not as well-known as Ron Carter and Christian McBride as a bassist, but he is still incredibly versatile. His switch-hitter skills on upright and bass guitars, and his humming and bowing, a la Slam Stewart make him a memorable live performer. Wikipedia
