Jaleel Shaw

Jaleel Shaw, alto/soprano jazzophonist and bandleader, is also a member the Roy Haynes Quartet and Tom Harrell’s”Colors Of A Dream”. He has performed with Christian McBride and Jason Moran as well as the Mingus Big Band and Stefon Harris. Jaleel, a Philadelphia native, was raised and brought up in Philadelphia. He learned the alto saxophone early on. Jaleel was a keen participant in the local jazz scene. He studied with and performed alongside many of the greatest musicians and educators the city has ever produced. After graduating high school, he was awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA, where he earned a double degree in Music Education u0026 Performance. Jaleel was awarded the Billboard Endowed Scholarship (1998) for outstanding academic and musical achievement, Woodwind Department Chair Awards (1998 and 2000), The Boston Jazz Society Award (1999), and The Outstanding Student Teacher Award (1999). After graduating from Berklee, he was awarded a scholarship to Manhattan School of Music where he earned his Masters in Jazz Performance. Jaleel’s debut album Perspective (2005) received rave reviews from Jazzwise Magazine and The New York Times. All About Jazz ranked the album among the top five debut albums for 2005. His composition, “The Heavyweight Champion”, was awarded the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Jaleel was a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet in 2006 and was featured on Whereas, the Grammy-nominated album by the drummer. Jaleel established his own label Changu Records in 2008, where he released Optimism. The album was well-received by Downbeat, All About Jazz and The New York Times. He was also nominated for Jazz Journalist Association’s Up! Award.
